What's my purpose in this life ?
We are told without a purpose - we drift and find life a challenge etc
Well, I had the most amazing conversation today with a 21 year old student who is in his third year of a four year criminology degree. He’s working part time at a car rental firm to help pay his rent and bills.
He served me at the car rental company and was so fantastic at his job - we started chatting and he told me that he works part-time to pay his rent etc.
I asked why criminology and he was able to tell me exactly what his career path was going to look like - now we all know, that life plans can change but what I was so impressed about was that a 21 year old guy was so passionate about his life today. He loves working at the car rental company - he told me that the company really looked after him, gave him some very valuable training and he loves meeting people and helping them with their car rental.
He’s living with three other students, all at the same uni and they are supporting each other as they work for their degrees and generally manage life - paying rent and bills and eating healthily etc.
He was such a lovely guy and so inspiring - he just loved life and the told me he loves the hustle of working to pay his bills - he earns just enough to pay all of his bills and for his food.
He receives no support from his parents so has a student loan for course fees. But, he’s happy to pay this off when he passes his degree and starts his career.
So many people - young and old - seem to struggle with their purpose in life and therefore lack motivation and drive - which we know without a purpose etc, leads to unhappiness.
Nothing was too much for him - he was more than willing to help me with all of my questions and even helped me with my next booking - he was just a joy to deal with.
A very confident young man, with no arrogance - very comfortable dealing with all sorts of people and in a team environment.
And such an inspiration to other people of his age but also to all of us.
As some of my friends start to retire - I wonder if they will lose their purpose and if so, what will their life look like in a few years time ?
I’m pretty sure, that in a few years time, the guy I met today will be doing something worthwhile and fulfilling for his life and for our community and the planet.
As I am facing new challenges in my life, I want to have his energy and drive and motivation and commitment to live my life today in a similar positive manner and also have the road map for where my life is going - even if some unexpected turns come about - we know there is no point thinking about what could happen - we are the drivers of our life, let’s drive and steer our own course.
It’s a choice and I choose to have his drive etc.
Thank you to Charlie - you will never know the impact you had on me today.
